Total Hip Replacement:

A total hip replacement is a surgical procedure whereby the diseased cartilage and bone of the hip joint is surgically replaced with artificial materials. Total hip joint replacement involves surgical removal of the diseased ball and socket and replacing them with a metal ball and stem inserted into the femur bone and an artificial plastic cup socket.

Considering Total Hip Replacement:

Patients with damaged hip joint either due to Osteoarthritis, Trauma, Congenital abnormality of the hip, Asceptic Necrosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis etc. The progressively intense chronic pain together with impairment of daily function including walking, climbing stairs, and even arising from a sitting position, eventually become reasons to consider a total hip replacement. .

Risks involved in Total Hip Replacement?

There are no specific risks of the procedure besides the usual complications associated with anaesthesia and any other general surgery like shortness of breath, pulmonary embolism, nausea vomiting, shock etc.

Pre-Operative Period:

The hip joint and the joints adjacent to it will be evaluated. There will be several blood tests to assess the state of liver kidneys. ECG and X ray chest will be taken for ensuring a sound heart and lungs. Patient will be asked to donate blood for use during the surgery which will be advantageous in minimizing the risks related to blood transfusions.

Post-Operative Period:

After the surgery which generally lasts for two to four hours, both lower limbs will be observed for adequate sensation and circulation. Besides starting Pain Killers and Antibiotics, compression stockings are applied to prevent blood clotting in the lower limbs. Physical Therapy will begin in 48 hrs. The therapist will help the patient in walking and reinstating the movement of the knee. The knee will be in an immobiliser which will be removed after the doctor deems it fit to be done. Patients will start walking using a walker and crutches. Eventually, patients will learn to walk up and down stairs and grades. Patients are given home exercise programs to strengthen the muscles around the buttock and thigh.

Follow Up:

It is important for patients to continue in an outpatient physical-therapy program along with home exercises for optimal outcome of the replacement surgery. Excercising and maintaining mobility will help prevent the scarring of the replaced joint and improve muscle strength around the joint.

You will be allowed to do certain excercises. Only those are preferred which does not exert unnecessary pressure like swimming.

The patient should never forget to inform any future doctor or dentist about having an artificial joint. any invasive procedure is a potent source of infection to the joint.

Patients are instructed to look for signs of infection, including swelling, warmth, redness, or increased pain in or around the surgical site in which case doctor should be immediately consulted.
